Before you buy

How much maths do I need?

Comfort with algebra, and having met derivatives once. Everything beyond that, vectors, partial derivatives, divergence, curl, and complex numbers, is built from scratch in the Math Toolkit, which exists precisely so the chapters do not have to stop and apologise. If you have done a first year of university physics or a good high school course, you are past the bar.

Is this a textbook replacement?

No, and it does not try to be. A textbook teaches you to calculate and gives you four hundred problems. This teaches you what the thing you are calculating means. They work well together, and most readers use this alongside a course rather than instead of one.

I already watched the videos. Is this the same content?

Four of the twelve chapters overlap with published videos, and even those go further, because a written derivation can be followed line by line at your own speed in a way a video cannot. The other eight have never been covered anywhere on the channel.

Is it rigorous or is it hand-waving?

Rigorous where rigour changes your understanding, and explicit about it when a step is being sketched rather than proved. Where a full derivation would take twenty pages and teach you nothing, the book says so and shows the load-bearing move instead. It never pretends an analogy is a proof.
